Done is Better than Perfect
I love this quote by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, "Done is better than perfect." It's the idea of doing something, even if it's not ideal.
This philosophy doesn't work with a lot of things, but when it comes to digital marketing, it's 100% right on.
If you take your time to create the perfect blog post, or social media post, so perfect that it takes you hours to work on, and lots of revisions, you are wasting your time. Hate to say it, but it's true. The most effective digital strategy (it actually pre-dates digital strategy) is frequency over perfection. High frequency does two important things:
Builds your Brand
Gives you Authority
The more you are out there - posting on social, writing emails, etc., the more people will see your business and your brand will grow as a result of frequent posting. Not just that, but people will see you as the the authority or expert in your space.
I could spend hours on every blog and post, but I'm trying to run a business. I have clients to meet, ads to run, bills to pay, things to do! I cannot set aside hours of my week dedicated to creating the perfect post. I'd way rather have a constant flow of information.
Perfection paralyzes. Perfection never comes. There is always one more thing you could do to improve something. While you're waiting for that moment to come, you just lost one very important thing: the chance to get in front of eyeballs.
I'm not saying do crappy work - that will reflect poorly on you. But if you're waiting for the perfect moment of inspiration to strike, that will lead to a perfect video, I'm saying that moment may not come. And if it does, it's too infrequent to make a difference for your business.
So take the chance. Write that quick post and move on with your day! My challenge to you: post frequently! Remember, done is better than perfect.
